Junior High Awards Night

Junior High Awards Night is a night for the 7th & 8th Grade students to receive both athletic and academic awards for the year.
Erica was totally shocked when she received a "Gold" Academic Award.  She thought she would receive a silver award, and you could tell she was a little disappointed when they didn't call her name.  But, her smile said it all when her name was called for a gold one instead.  A "Gold" Academic Award means that she carried a 95% or higher average for the school year.  We are so proud of Erica!
Along with her academic award, she received participation awards for track, basketball and volleyball.  In volleyball, she received the "Best Motivator" award for the "B" team by her teammates.

This night was a "divide and conquer" night for Keith and me.  He was at baseball while I went to the awards night.  I sent him a text about Erica's gold academic award and he responded back, "Awesome for Erica!  Justin is the starting pitcher".  Too bad we both couldn't be at both events to cheer on our kids.

Take care,
Michelle

5th/6th Grade Track & Field Day

The grade school has two days of track & field for the 3rd/4th and 5th/6th Grade at the beginning of May.  We all pray for nice weather for two days because if they get cancelled there probably isn't another day to reschedule on the calendar.
Ashlin participated in the softball throw, long jump, 400 meter run, 200 meter dash and a 4x100 meter relay.  Ashlin placed 3rd in softball throw, 4th in the 400M run and 5th in the 200M dash and 2nd in the 4x100 meter relay.
Sorry no photos of her running because my job was to get students lined up by heat and lane for the starter.
It was a bright and sunny day at the track!!!
Take care,
Michelle

Jump Rope for Heart

Every year Ms. Freese sponsors "Jump Rope for Heart".  The kids spend some time in PE class working on their jump roping skills and getting signed up.
Justin couldn't wait to jump this year.  The kids jump for three hours on a Sunday afternoon and raise money for the American Heart Association.  They have the chance to win prizes and get a treat bag at the end.
Take care,
Michelle

Cara's Confirmation

Cara celebrated the Sacrament of Confirmation on March 30th.  She chose her godfather, Uncle Randy, to be her sponsor.  We had an early supper with Randy, Grandma and Grandpa Leader and Grandma and Grandpa Korth.  The best part may have been the cake.  Cara chose strawberry cake with Bavarian cream filling.  It was so delicious!

The Mass was celebrated by the retired Archbishop Curtiss, Fr. Dan Andrews, and Father Matt.  The Knights of Columbus lined the aisle with their swords for the processional and recessional.  Each confirmation candidate walked in with their sponsor behind them.

 Cara & McKinzie
 Cara & Bree
 Cara & Jadyn
Cara & Elliot (the neighborhood kids).  They tried to get out of this photo, but it is a tradition.  We have photos of Cara & Elliot together from 2nd Grade First Communion and 6th Grade Promotion.  Not too long ago, Cara was taller than Elliot, but not anymore.

Kissing A Pig

Every month the students are challenged by Mrs. Guenther with a reading goal.  She calls the program "Book in the Backpack".  Every night the students are to read for a minimum of 10 minutes and then have their parents sign a reading log.

In January, the goal was to have 265 students read one night.  If they reached this number on any day in the month, then Mr. Lafleur would kiss a pig.  If they reached 280 students, then Mrs. Guenther and Mrs. Vrbka would also kiss a pig.  Every day at school the number of readers from the previous night is included in the end-of-the-day announcements.

The students reached this goal and this is the pig that came to school.  We had a student assembly and the pig was brought into the gym squealing.  The students were so excited!!!  It was a great month for reading!

Michelle

Winning Some Hardware

These 7th Grade girls have had a great club basketball season.  So far they have placed in every tournament except one.  And the one tournament that they didn't medal in was a tournament that they had to play up in the 8th Grade Division.  This last weekend they won their own NC tournament.
They encountered a tough team from Homer in the first game.  It was a very, very physical hard fought game.
Then they won games against Wayne, Pierce and Neligh.
Erica doesn't always get to play, but when she does she has to make the most out of her minutes on the floor.  She did put up two shots and one shot did go in for her two points.  Basketball is not her favorite sport or maybe her best sport, but she practices and puts forth the effort.

The victory huddle after a long day in the gym.
At the NC Tournament, if you place 1st, the team gets championship t-shirts and medals.

Erica has one more tournament left in a few weeks before the basketball season is over.  It was a long weekend in the gym.  We sat through basketball games, wrestling and volleyball.  Needless to say, I am way behind on laundry, errands, etc.

Take care,
Michelle

5th Grade Basketball

This group of 5th Grade girls had a tough club ball  season.  Some girls are have played the game for a few years and some are touching the ball for the first time.  The coaches do a good job of getting each girl playing time in every game.
The girls played in four tournaments this season - Stanton, Pierce, YMCA and Norfolk Catholic.
Finally, during the last tournament, the girls came up with a win.  After the game, the girls were jumping up and down and hugging.  They were so excited to get a win!!!

Ashlin played mostly as a guard this year.  She is not afraid to shoot and has pretty good ball control.
The season may be over, but with the weather turning warmer this week, she has been outside in the driveway shooting hoops and dribbling with Erica and Justin.

Take care,
Michelle
