Lawnmower Safety

After the 4-H meeting last Saturday, the kids had a choice of arm knitting or listening to a presentation on lawn mower safety.  I told the girls that lawn mower safety it was. (Are you picturing the eye rolls in your head because trust me all three girls had it going on).
Cara and Erica both mow our lawn and safety is very important.  Two dads gave a GREAT presentation on proper attire, a safety checklist before starting the mower, and safety while mowing.  The safety lesson was on a push mower and a riding mower.
The girls are enrolled in a safety project and this presentation will work great for a poster for the project.  Later that afternoon, the girls got to go to the movies, so, fair is fair.

Amelia Earhart Project

The 4th Graders had to complete a social studies project on an event or person that shaped/changed history.  Each student had the choice of picking a partner or completing the project on their own.  Ashlin worked with Sydney on the project and they chose Amelia Earhart has their person.
For the project, they had to write a paper about the event or person, create a display board and give a presentation to the class.  Then the grade hosted an open house for parents and other students to view their projects and ask them questions.

This project was right up Ashlin's alley.  When she wants to know more about an event or person, she spends the time and really does research.  She looked up information on the computer, but she also read a book about Amelia Earhart.  Ashlin and Sydney actually got docked on their paper for having too much information about Amelia Earhart.  When I was proofing the paper and I suggested some things to cut, Ashlin immediately said, "NO" because she felt all the information was important.

This was a great project for the students.  They all had a great time researching a topic of interest.

Art Show Award

Cara had an art piece chosen to compete in the Mid-State Conference junior high art show.  Yesterday she brought home her piece and Cara had received a third place ribbon.  Cara was shocked and proud that she had placed.  Art class is not one of Cara's strength, but I think her art piece turned out very good.  Cara is going to enter it this summer as a 4-H project.

Junior High Spring Music Concert

Cara had her last junior high music concert last weekend.  The 8th Grade class sang a medley of songs from "The Little Mermaid".
Music is not one of Cara's favorite subjects and she will not be in the choir next year in high school.  She is ready to move on and try other things, but not in music.

First Track Meet of the Season

Track season has started.  Yesterday was the first junior high track meet of the season and the weather was actually pretty nice.  The wind was blowing, but the temp was about 70 degrees.  Cara is out for track, but for now she has limited availability because of her shoulder.  She was cleared to long jump at the end of last week.  After only jumping in the pit one practice, she jumped yesterday.  Rough day with two scratches and the other jump wasn't very good.  But, the coach told her next time she jumps to just beat that one jump.  She cheered on the other kids and had a good time.  Justin and I watched and cheered.

D.E.A.R. Day

Today is D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything and Read) Day at school.  The students could dress up as a character from a book.  Can you guess which book characters these two are?

Justin dressed up as Skippyjon Jones and Ashlin dressed up as Pippi Longstocking.  They both were up early and dressed for school in no time.  Excited about the day, but also nervous about being laughed at by some classmates.  It will be a fun day at school!!!

Wrestling Season Ends

The wrestling season has also come to an end.  Justin had an awesome season on the mat!!!  He won 1st at four tournaments, 2nd at two tournaments, and 3rd at one tournament.
He wrestled between 47 and 49 pounds this year which is light for a first grader.  Next year, he will stay in the same age division of 1st & 2nd graders.
Justin learned some new wrestling moves this year and his technique continues to improve.  We have definitely noticed that he wrestles much better when he has a coach on the mat telling him what to do instead of a parent.

Club Basketball Comes to an End

The last weekend in March was the last weekend for club basketball and the 6th Grade girls played in the West Point Guardian Angel Tournament.  A win on Friday night put them in the championship game on Saturday afternoon.
Before the championship game, the players from both teams were announced.

Our girls played a select team from Lincoln in the championship.  The first half was close with the other team pulling away in the second half.

After the game, the girls received their runner-up medals in front of the crowd as the announcer said each player's name.  The girls had a great season, but it was time to move onto the next sport.  They have been playing basketball since November.

Happy Easter!

It almost killed them to have their photo taken after church.  Do you have any idea how many times I heard, "Just take the photo and get it over with!" or "How many photos are you taking?"  This was the best photo out of about five or so.
We have celebrated Easter the last two weekends.  Last weekend with on the Korth side and on Easter with the Leader side.
These were the "little egg hunters" on the Leader side.

Sam found a jackpot of eggs hid inside the gas grill.
Grandma Korth has the kids go on a scavenger hunt to find their eggs and each one has a certain color egg to find.
Julia couldn't handle if her plastic egg broke open and spilled the prize inside; so, Cara had to help put some eggs back together.
