Powder Puff Football

It's Homecoming Week at Norfolk Catholic.  As is tradition, the week starts with a Powder Puff Football game between the senior and junior girls.  The coaches are the boys in the respective classes.
Since the Seniors don't have enough girls to field a team, they asked the sophomore girls to join them to form a team.  Therefore, the Leader sisters were on the same team.

The game is supposed to be for fun, but some players and coaches take the game pretty seriously.

It is fun to watch and usually good for a few laughs as the coaches throw hats and clipboards, yell at the girls and girls line up offsides.  Usually a few hits are thrown in also.

Last year the junior and sophomore girls beat the seniors.  This year the junior girls beat the senior/sophomore team.

After the game, the NC is burned and each class did a cheer.

Lockerroom Snacks

The Senior and Junior Moms have been busy making posters for the hallway, signs for the lockers, plans for team meals and snacks for the lockerroom.
Hayden's Mom, Pam, made up these baskets of snacks for the lockerroom for the girls.  "Let's Chew on some feathers . . . And "blow" up these Lady Eagles!!!"  This bucket was gilled with bubblegum and chewing gum.
"Lady Knights start popping off the victories!" was for the second basket filled with various kinds of popcorn.

More snack baskets are in the works for future games!!!

Take care,
Michelle

College Visit #1

College visit #1 took place on Friday when Cara and Keith went to Wayne State College for a Friday Focus Senior Day.  They toured the campus, ate lunch, talked to a science professor, toured the science labs, etc.
Cara thinks that she wants to become a Lab Technician and work at a hospital performing tests.  Last spring she job shadowed in three areas at our hospital and the lab is what she liked the best.  At that time, the hospital had two college interns and they spoke to Cara about what classes she needed to take and how they enjoyed the work.

Cara was impressed by how new the science labs were at Wayne State.  She ran into some students that she knew.  Cara liked that she got to sit down one-on-one with a science professor and talk about her major and ask questions about the program.  She would go to Wayne State for three years and then transfer to UNMC for course work and then an internship for the last year.

Keith and Cara were both impressed with the campus.  Wayne State is going growing and is making improvements continuously.  This summer they put a new fire alarm system in one of the dorms, put in a new press box for the football field and are constructing a new applied technology building.  Keith was not impressed that not all the dorms have air conditioning.  But, they both felt that Cara could attend Wayne State College.

Next month, we will have college visit #2.  Cara is attending a college fair this week at Northeast to gather more information.  This last week I attended a financial aid meeting for seniors and there parents.  There is quite a bit to do!

Take care,
Michelle

Jr High Volleyball Wins Cedar Catholic Tournament

Ashlin started her 8th Grade volleyball season at the Hartington Cedar Catholic Junior High Tournament on Saturday.  There is a 7th Grade Division and an 8th Grade Division at this tournament.  They each play in different gyms.

In the first game, the 8th Grade played Homer and were victorious in two straight sets.
Ashlin started on Saturday.  She is playing outside hitter and setting sometimes depending where she is in the rotation.
In the second set, the girls played Laurel/Concord/Coleridge.  The girls split sets with them, but ended up winning on points allowed which put them in the championship game against Cedar Catholic.
Grandma and Grandpa Leader came and watched Ashlin play!  In between games, we went to Pizza Hut for lunch.
Cara helped coach these girls last year and she was pretty proud of how they played in this tournament.  Cara was taking photos for the yearbook throughout the day.
The championship game was the best out of three sets.  The girls dropped the first set 20-22.  But then came back and won the next two sets for the championship win!!!
I love this photo captured by one of the Moms!  They were so excited and the rest of the team stormed the floor!

While the 8th Grade girls were winning the championship, the 7th Grade girls were in the other gym winning the championship in their division also.  It was a great day in the gym for both teams bringing home gold medals!

Take care,
Michelle

More Volleyball

The high school girls had two home games this last week.  They played Lutheran High on Tuesday and Wahoo High on Thursday.  They should have beat Lutheran High, but lost 1-3.  Wahoo High is the defending Class C1 state champion and had three Division I recruits on the floor.  It was a rough night as the girls fell in straight sets.  They may not be winning, but they don't give up fighting!  Our girls play one of the hardest schedules in the state and this week it doesn't get any easier.

Grandma Korth has come to the Pierce and Lutheran High games to support Cara.

This was last week's locker sign for the girls.

This is this week's locker sign.  I gave Cara a choice between two signs and she chose this one because Coach Barry is really stressing "team".  The senior and junior girls on the team are really trying to promote team, so, after a few games the girls have gone to McDonald's to talk and be together.  The older girls make sure all the girls have rides so that the younger girls can attend also.

Take care,
Michelle

Meaning of Labor Day

According to the internet the meaning of Labor Day is:

"Labor Day in the United States of America is a public holiday celebrated on the first Monday in September. It honors the American labor movement and the contributions that workers have made to the strength, prosperity, laws, and well-being of the country. It is the Monday of the long weekend known as Labor Day Weekend. It is recognized as a federal holiday."

According to the Leader children it is the day that you celebrate how long your mother went through labor to bring you into the world.  I'm not quite sure where they got this from, but it sure gave them a laugh.  They also thought it was a great reason to get a day off from school.

Michelle

The One Play Game

My work has six season tickets for the Nebraska football games and I can request to use them.  I asked if anyone was using the tickets for the first game and no one had requested them.  Therefore, I asked for four tickets for the first game against Akron.
The varsity volleyball team had a tournament that day at Columbus Scotus, so, Keith, Erica, Ashlin and Justin were going to stop at the tournament and watch for awhile before heading to Lincoln for the game.
The weather forecast for the football did not look good. But, it was Scott Frost's first game as the new coach for his alma mater, plus it was a night game and everyone knew that Memorial Stadium would be rocking.
After watching volleyball that morning, Erica wasn't feeling the best, so, Keith asked a another Dad at the game if he would like to join them at the game.
Gale has a friend that does the fireworks at the football games and that is how Justin got up on the roof of the stadium for an awesome view.

Justin also got to go in the broadcast booth and see how things work behind the scenes.
They got to see the new re-vamped tunnel walk of the players coming out from the locker room.  They saw two Norfolk Catholic football players on the field for a recruiting visit.  Ethan Piper has already committed to play for the Huskers next year.  Dillon Kautz is being looked at to play for the Huskers.
The game lasted for one play - the kick off, before lightning was sighted and the game was on a weather delay. The storms kept rolling through the area and after a few hours the game was cancelled.  Even if the game was only one play, they all agreed that they had a blast!

Take care,
Michelle
